Rise in Tennis at Packer

Packer’s Varsity Tennis Team is back, and ready to start the new season with a new home site closer to Packer.  The new practice courts are located at McCarren Park Tennis Center, in Williamsburg.  The new site is closer to Packer, thus the Tennis team does not have to commute very far to practice.  Tryouts for both the Varsity Boys Tennis team and the Varsity Girls Tennis team started on Monday the 27th of February.

According to Darrin Fallick, Director of Athletics, the Boys Team and the Girls Team will have 10 members each with cuts after the tryouts.  The Boys Varsity Team will be playing in the ACIS and the Girls Varsity Team will be playing in the AAIS.  Both teams will play 9 matches in addition to the playoffs and championships.

The Tennis team got to the playoffs last year, but didn’t win.  Some members of the team are expecting to win this year, however.

“We’re going to be elite,” said Max Marshall (‘18), “last year we were good, but this year we’re gonna be a lot better.”

The rise in Tennis at Packer can be attributed to the fact that the home site has been moved closer to Packer, as the last practicing area was quite far away.

“The courts are much closer.  Last year they were two hours away, now they are 20 minutes away.  It is no coincidence that this year brings in the most players since I’ve been at Packer,” said Taiki Chung (‘18), who has been on the tennis team for what is now three years.

When asked about how they are projected to do this year, he expressed confidence and hope for a program that in the past, has not been able to separate themselves from tough competition.

“Last year we had a less experienced group of kids and we made first round playoffs. This year we have a lot of serious players so I expect us to do even better, possibly winning the championship.”

Note: Gunnar Carroll (’18) provided the quotes from Taiki.
