Three Pelican’s Reach 1,000

Homegrown: the current mantra of the non-athletically recruited seniors in Packer’s auspicious basketball program. Three seniors, Blake Martin (‘17), Brittany Boyce (‘17), and Victor Akujobi (‘17) spearhead the program as leaders, both on and off the court, and recently all became members of the illustrious 1,000 point club.

“I love the fact that we are homegrown,” said Athletic Director Darrin Fallick. “We look to accept the best kids, sometimes they are athletes and sometimes they are not. The fact that this year we have three 1,000 point scorers, all of who were homemade over the course of their time here at Packer, is a true testament to the kids, coaches, and our philosophy of showing up every day and working hard.”

Blake, a four-year varsity starter and fan favorite, reached the 1,000 point milestone early in his senior season.

Ever since I was a little kid watching varsity games, I wanted to be on that same court and hopefully get to 1,000,” said Blake. “As the years progressed, I started to score more and the possibility of getting to 1,000 became more feasible. When I got it, I felt very relieved and proud to be able to go down in history and forever have my name on that list.”

Blake continued to say, “I’m a very humble person so when I got it and Boutis stopped the game to commemorate me, I was grateful but I wanted to continue play.”

Brittany became the first girls varsity player to reach the 1,000 point milestone since 2001.

“Reaching 1,000 points was such a surreal experience for me,” said Brittany. “Honestly, when I scored that last basket I couldn’t believe it.  It was so crazy to me that everyone came out to support me in this achievement and how happy people were for me even if they weren’t involved in the basketball community.”

Brittany continued to say, “I think the journey to reaching 1,000 points was more meaningful than actually scoring the basket because it meant so much to the program and the team. It was one of those things that added to the great season we are already having.”

Victor, the big man in the middle, became the third to reach the milestone this year and the 8th boys varsity player in history to reach 1,000 points.

“Honestly I didn’t think about reaching 1,000 points until this year because as a ball player, all you focus on is winning games,” said Victor. “Ultimately though, scoring 1,000 points feels great. Other than championship hardware, it feels like a concrete accomplishment that I can look back on and feel proud of.”

Victor continued to say, “I could not have reached this milestone without my teammates. In all the practices, games, and huddles, they inspired me to be the absolute best player I could be. I am eternally grateful for having great teammates, great coaches, and an all around great support system that has carried me for four years.”

Darrin continued his praise of the three 1,000 point pelicans.

“Blake, Brittany, and Victor are three of the best kids I have ever been around in my 25 years in education,” he said. “I can’t say enough about them and their accomplishment.”
